Never put a newborn to sleep in a car seat outside of a moving vehicle, as the inclined position can compromise the airway. Never allow a newborn to sleep in a swing, bouncy seat, or inclined sleeper without direct supervision, for the same reason. Never add rice cereal or any other food to a bottle in hopes of making your newborn sleep longer — this practice does not work and introduces choking and allergy risks. Never give your newborn any sedating medications, including antihistamines, without explicit direction from your pediatrician. And never place your baby on their stomach to sleep, even if they seem more settled that way — the SIDS risk is not worth it.
