Important if you have an Aetna HMO
Aetna HMO plans require you to designate a primary care physician, and for a child that means naming a pediatrician on the plan.
If you're joining our practice with an Aetna HMO, you'll need to designate Dr. Priya Thomas as your child's PCP. You can do this through your Aetna member portal, the Aetna Health app, or by calling the member services number on the back of your card. It typically takes effect immediately or the first of the following month.
This matters more than parents expect. If your child isn't assigned to us, HMO claims may be denied even though we accept the plan. It takes five minutes and it prevents a billing headache later.
Aetna PPO, POS, and open-access plans generally don't require a PCP designation, though naming one is still worthwhile for care coordination.
What's typically covered
Under the Affordable Care Act, most Aetna plans cover pediatric preventive care at 100% with no copay, including:

Newborn care visits
Sick visits, specialist care, and procedures are typically subject to your copay, coinsurance, or deductible depending on plan design.
Aetna plan structures vary considerably by employer. Always verify your specific benefits with Aetna before a non-preventive visit.
Newborns on an Aetna plan
Add your baby to your plan within 30 days of birth. This is a hard deadline on most employer plans, and missing it can leave your newborn uncovered until the next open enrollment.
Your baby is generally covered under the mother's policy for the first 30 days, but claims from our office will process much more smoothly once the baby has their own member ID.
We see newborns 1–2 days after hospital discharge. Call as soon as you know your discharge date.
